Get Newsleecher SuperSearch service to work with avast! Anti-Virus
Posted: March 26 2008

There's a compatibility issue between avast! Anti-Virus and the SuperSearch Service built into Newsleecher. If you're using avast, and you have the problem where SuperSearch doesn't seem to work (it won't return any results at all), then there's an easy fix for the problem.

A good indicator that you have this problem is after a couple minutes of SuperSearch trying to fetch results you'll get an error box that reads:
"Unable to receive a reply from the SuperSearch service."
If this sounds like what's happening to you then you most likely have to follow the steps below to get SuperSearch to work.

Note: This compatibility issue exists when using Newsleecher v3.9 Beta 14 and avast! Anti-Virus Home Edition v4.7.1098. I'm not sure if this issue exists between different versions or not.
  1. First right-click on the avast spinning "a" icon in your taskbar. On the menu that pops up click On-Access Protection Control.
  2. Next click the Details... >> button.
  3. Next click the Internet Mail provider from the list on the left, then click the Customize... button.
  4. Next click the NNTP tab
  5. Finally un-check the two options Scan inbound news and Scan outbound news so there's no check mark next to either. Then click the OK button.
